Dan Cohen is an award-winning songwriter, singer and producer of music for film, tv, and cd. He has extensive experience in opera, cabaret, and musical theatre, as well as children’s and family music. He’s a John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize winner, New York Magazine Best Party Entertainer, and he brings all his experience and versatility to every project.
He’s placed songs with both corporate clients and popular recording artists. Credits include: Disney’s JoJo’s Circus, Nickelodeon, and Jumpbunch (children’s in-school exercise program). His song Your Reward is on Austin-based singer/songwriter Sara Hickman‘s album Motherlode. As Danna Banana, his original children’s music has generated much popular and critical acclaim, as well as 5 cds that have also generated regular play on Pandora, SiriusXM, JetBlue, and many other platforms.
Dan’s experience with a wide range of songwriting styles make him a skilled collaborator on all kinds of projects. He’s worked with some of the finest musicians in New York, including Steven Bernstein, Henry Aronson (conductor of Rock of Ages on Broadway), Dan Rosengard, Joel Newton, Norbert Stachel, Vinny Sperrazza, Josh Dion, and many others.
Dan attended Oberlin College before graduating from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in Dramatic Writing. He then created and co-produced Gusto House, a Manhattan performance art space that helped launch the careers of the Blue Man Group, John Leguizamo, Steve Buscemi and many others. Later he earned a second degree, in vocal performance at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and worked as a baritone with opera companies all over the country.
His career took a new turn as he had kids and developed as Danna Banana, a songwriter and performer for children and families. He has released five award-winning albums of original music and developed a devoted following for his concerts and shows. He also teaches and offers musical workshops and assemblies for a wide variety of educational, corporate, and personal clients.
